Everyone wants to be happy, but sometimes it’s easier said than done. With that in mind, here are three simple things you can do in a matter of seconds to you look and feel happier!
People behave in a particular way when they experience certain thoughts and emotions. When they are sad, they cry. When they agree, they nod their head, and when they are happy they smile. According to an area of research known as “proprioceptive psychology”, this process also works in reverse. That is, if you get people to behave in a certain way and you can cause them to feel certain emotions and have certain thoughts. People smile when they are happy but they also feel happier because they are smiling!
There are a number of happiness- inducing behaviours that can be quickly incorporated into your everyday life. Firstly, and most importantly, smile more! Research suggests that you should try to maintain the expression for 15 to 30 seconds to be effective.
2. Sit –up.
No, not the kind you do in the gym! Research has shown your posture has a strong effect on your mood. In one study, participants were split into two groups and asked to spend 3 minutes either sitting up straight or slumping in their chairs. Everyone was then given a Math test and asked to assess their mood. Those who sat upright were much happier than those who had slouched, and they even scored higher on the Math test!
3. Act happy
Other research has suggested that happy people move in a different way than unhappy people do. Walking in a relaxed way, swinging your arms slightly more and putting more of a spring in your step were movement patterns associated with greater levels of happiness
Incorporating these behaviours into your everyday actions can help to enhance your happiness, so sit up and smile and start acting happy, and before you know it you’ll be feeling better in no time!
